Why was Picfree created?
Simply, I have worked in the print industry for 21 years and know just how difficult the right image is to find and when you do find it, it costs money and all you want to do - is use it to make your presentation look good! Without any fear of the copyright police coming round and arresting you.
I used to take pictures and keep them in a folder just in case I needed a picture of a door or a flower that I could use in my presentations – please note that I don’t class myself as a photographer not even an amateur photographer, I just aim my camera and shoot and hopefully the pictures look OK!
In January 2008 I was awarded a FUJIFILM S5Pro Camera for my contribution to an organisation who help GCSE students look at the print industry as a career option. The award was called “The Ambassador for Print”. I was very surprised to be awarded such an honour.
I decided that I would give something back so I collated all of my photographs and put them together in one place – I realised that I had quite a few pictures sat doing nothing, so I decided to set up a website called “Picfree” that allows people to use in four ways:
1 Students: All students can use the image(s) worldwide, for course work, presentations, PowerPoints, creating posters, with no limit on the number of times used, you can use the images for magazines (print or electronic – within the school), calendars, newspapers, advertising, design, stationery, CD covers, phone cards, postcards, merchandise, mobile phones, multimedia products, cups, hats, T-shirts and many other creative ways just download and use, including products for sale and fund raising for the school – please send picture so we can show other school what you have done.
2 Artists/Designer: All artists of any nature can use the images as reference material at no cost, it would be nice to see a reference on your website, but you can’t reference an image in a painting so feel free to use all the images. I hope this will save time hunting through books and websites when you should be creative.
3 Businesses: There are times in industry when a simple picture can tell a thousand words – well please feel free to use all of the pictures in this website with our blessing. Please note as long as you don’t publish the picture they are free to use. You will also notice that we have not put a water mark in any of the pictures (as this will only be cut off), this is so that you can use the image straight from the website. I hope that some of your presentations benefit from having some quirky pictures that liven them up.
4 Published Cost: The only cost is for high res pictures that will be published “printed or used on commercial website”. The cost will be a one payment of £10.00, PicFree© will supply 1 x master picture un-edited and 1 x screen image (as seen when clicking on screen)
What happens to the £10.00? This will be split in three ways.
- £1.00 will go to each of the 4 founders
- £3.00 will be use to run the site
- £3.00 will go into a pot for students to use for personal purchases such as memory sticks – a special link will be developed once the funds are collected.
Conditions of Free Use and Download Instructions
www.picfree.co.uk© provides its images under three available licensing options.
1) ANYONE, by which we mean commercial and non-commercial alike, can use www.picfree.co.uk© images in an online setting, providing they provide attribution to the image and a link back to www.picfree.co.uk© (either the image or the main site). This license allows blogs, social networking sites and use in emails, just to name a few, providing they provide the required attribution, this includes sites that pay people to write, carry advertising or are selling, promoting products or printed magazines. The only requirement the attribution and link back to the original site or picture.
2) This provides for use in any media providing it is not for commercial purposes and they are not making a derivative image or gallery. This allows use such as for an artist to paint based on our images, or to be used in school or the work place (such as PowerPoint presentations) work or college projects.
3) Users can purchase a Picture to allow use in print and other media including, online, television, film, newspapers, magazines, marketing and advertising. This purchase enables use without attribution and without requirements to pay a further royalty (it is a one off fee). The user will not own copyright but will be able to use the picture as many times as they please (responsibly). Copyright can be sort by contacting www.picfree.co.uk© website.
www.picfree.co.uk© is an interesting proposition. We are not traditional Stock Photograph. We offer our clients high quality images as well as A5, A4 and A3 high res 300 dpi versions on request.
At the same time we allow anyone to download our web size images to use on the internet (link back and attribution required).
Also non-commercial users may download our web size images to use off-line in school projects, church services, leaflets, etc. Basically if your off-line use is not commercial you can download our web size images for free. All we ask is that you follow these simple rules.
1. You must credit the www.picfree.co.uk© web site on your website or alongside any non commercial printed use.
If you use one of the full screen images you must place a hypertext link with the line Supplied by www.picfree.co.uk© in a conspicuous place.
We also ask that you add a (c) www.picfree.co.uk© to the image alt tag.
You may also use our images on blogs, forums, social networking sites and video sharing sites like YouTube or other interactive social sites.
You MAY NOT use the images to create your own photo gallery web site.

This Agreement is a legal contract that specifies the terms of the license and warranty and liability limitations between you and www.picfree.co.uk© for any image(s) supplied by www.picfree.co.uk©. You agree to be bound by the terms hereof by accepting any image(s).
IN CONSIDERATION of the payment of the fees stated for accepting one or more photographic images from www.picfree.co.uk©, and in further consideration of your acceptance of the provisions of this agreement, www.picfree.co.uk© hereby grants you a personal, non-transferable, nonexclusive, limited right to use such images subject to the following terms and conditions:
You are licensed to use the image(s) worldwide, with no limit on the number of times used, for the following purposes ONLY: ADVERTISING, PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS, POSTERS, POSTCARDS, and PRODUCT PACKAGING, ONLINE and WEB PAGES, ANY and ALL PRODUCTS, PUBLICATIONS (print or electronic), INCLUDING PRODUCTS FOR SALE, and FUND RAISING.
The image(s) itself (themselves) may not be copied, distributed or used other than as set forth above. Under no circumstances shall the image(s) be used for pornographic, libellous, defamatory or any other improper or illegal purposes.
The user has no right to use the photographic images relating to any identifiable persons, goods or entities in any way likely to bring the image of such persons, good or entities into disrepute, in particular by conferring upon them anything of a scandalous, obscene or immoral or similar nature, or which might suggest any link or association with any product, service or concept, by giving them a polemical, unfair, parasitical or defamatory nature.
Unless we indicate that an image has a model or property release, no such release exists. www.picfree.co.uk© gives no representations or warranties with respect to the use of names, trademarks, logos, uniforms, registered or copyrighted designs or works of art depicted in any image, and you must satisfy yourself that all necessary rights, consents or permissions as may be required for reproduction are secured.
Ownership. All rights to the image(s) are owned by www.picfree.co.uk© and are protected by copyright laws, international treaties and other applicable laws. www.picfree.co.uk© retain any and all rights, titles and interests not expressly granted by this license agreement. You may not transfer, assign or sublicense the image(s) without the prior written consent of www.picfree.co.uk©. Any attempt to transfer or assign this license without prior written consent to do so shall automatically terminate this license. Damages. Termination. This agreement shall immediately terminate upon violation of any of its provisions. Upon termination you must immediately stop using the image(s), delete all copies of such image(s) from your computer and all magnetic media.
YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF ANY IMAGE(S) CONSTITUTES YOUR CONSENT TO AND ACCEPTANCE OF THE FOREGOING IMAGE LICENSE.Educational Policy
Our educational policy is as follows:(1) Students may download and use our images in their own work. A credit to – www.picfree.co.uk© is required.
(2) An individual teacher may make use of our images in the course of their own personal teaching work. www.picfree.co.uk© is required.
(3) For Universities, colleges, etc. you may use our Internet size images free. A credit to www.picfree.co.uk© is required.
